Russell Wilson was absent from Tuesday’s workout, though it had nothing to do with his current contract situation. Even so, Wilson’s future remains a big topic of discussion as the quarterback heads into the final year of his rookie contract, and while Seahawks coach Pete Carroll wouldn’t go into details on the negotiations, he did say the two sides are communicating well.
“We’re very close,” Carroll said before clarifying that that didn’t mean close to a new contract. “We’re very close in our conversation and exchanging our process through this. Our communication has been great.”
Carroll said that if negotiations linger, he doesn’t see it being a problem for Wilson that will affect him on the field.
“I think as much as anybody can deal with it, Russell will,” Carroll said. “We’ve talked a lot about the process of it and expectations. He’s had a great offseason, he looks incredibly in-shape and faster than ever and all of that, he has worked great on the field when he’s been with us. He has really set his mind to it, and the proof is in what he can put out there, and he’s on it. We’ll hopefully get something done, but if we don’t, we’ll just have to deal with that.”
Asked how likely it is something gets done before training camp, Carroll said only, “I don’t know that. Not talking about that right now.”
As for Wilson’s backup the past two seasons, Carroll said nothing has changed between the team and Tarvaris Jackson. Carroll has said multiple times this offseason that they want Jackson back, but so far Jackson remains unsigned, an indicator that the Seahawks put an offer on the table and Jackson is waiting to see if he can get something better.
