I just had a brief conversation with Silvertips general manager Garry Davidson, and he said superstar prospect Auston Matthews would be making his decision on where to play next season either Wednesday or Thursday.
Davidson said Matthews, a center from Arizona who’s projected as the first-overall pick in the 2016 NHL draft, will choose between Everett and playing professionally in Switzerland, meaning it appears the NCAA is no longer in the running.
Davidson said he did not know how Matthews’ camp planned on making its announcement.
Everett selected Matthews, who is entering his 18-year-old season, in the third round of the 2012 bantam draft. Matthews spent the past two seasons with the U.S. National Team Development Program, and this season he broke the program’s single-season scoring record with 117 points (55 goals, 62 assists) in 60 games for the U-18 team.
