Dexter Griffen is returning for a second stint as the boys basketball coach at Mariner High School.
Griffen guided the Marauders for 11 seasons (1998-2009) and compiled a 147-111 record. He is the all-time winningest coach in the program’s history.
Griffen led Mariner to five state-tournament appearances. His 1998-99 squad went 21-7 and placed third in the Class 3A state tournament, the best finish school history.
Griffen is about to complete his 18th year as a physical education teacher at Mariner.
“The kids respond well to him because they know he cares about them as people,” Mariner athletic director Nate Duchesne said in a press release. “Dexter understands the balance between discipline and encouragement. His teams were always well-prepared, tough, unselfish, and they played the game the right way. He will be a tremendous mentor to the student-athletes at Mariner High School.
“We are very excited to have him back on board.”
