EDMONDS — A couple escaped a fire Tuesday that caused more than $100,000 damage to their Edmonds home.
The homeowners reported a fire with 5-foot flames in the basement of their home in the 700 block of 12th Avenue N on Tuesday afternoon.
“The woman saw smoke rising up the stairs from the basement and called to her husband,” said Leslie Hynes, spokeswoman for Snohomish County Fire District 1, which provides emergency services to the city of Edmonds.
The woman called 911 while her husband used a fire extinguisher to knock down flames in the basement.
“He left the basement to get another fire extinguisher, but when he returned the fire was too big and smoky for him to fight,” Hynes said.
Their cat died in the fire. Firefighters evaluated the man for exposure to smoke. He did not require medical treatment.
About 30 firefighters from District 1 and the Lynnwood Fire Department responded and had the blaze under control in about 20 minutes. No one was injured.
“The firefighters kept the flames contained to a kitchenette area in the basement, but a support beam was damaged and there was heavy smoke damage throughout the house,” Hynes said.
The homeowners have insurance. Fire investigators determined the fire started in the area of a microwave oven and the cause appeared to be electrical.
