MILL CREEK — Two caregivers escorted five people to safety after a fire broke out at an adult family home north of Mill Creek on Wednesday night.
The fire was reported around 8:40 p.m. at the two-story home in the 5200 block of 131st St. SE in unincorporated Snohomish County.
“All five residents were outside the home with their caregivers when firefighters arrived,” said Leslie Hynes, spokeswoman for Snohomish County Fire District 1. “Residents reported a smoke alarm sounded and they saw flames coming from an exhaust fan in a second-floor bathroom.”
Flames were through the roof on the backside of the house when firefighters arrived. Crews from fire districts 1 and 7 had the fire under control in about 20 minutes. No one was injured.
The Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated the fire and determined it started in the exhaust fan in the second-floor bathroom. Fire damage was contained to the bathroom and the attic and roof above. There was smoke damage throughout the second floor. Damage is estimated at more than $100,000.
Support 7 and the Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross are assisting the people displaced by the fire. They arranged housing at a nearby hotel and a Red Cross nurse provided assistance in obtaining prescription medications for the residents.
