Do you have your Apple Watch yet? Just 2 percent said they do in our latest poll at HeraldNet.com, with 4 percent more saying they can’t wait to get one. That leaves 94 percent scratching our heads and wondering what the rest of you are thinking.
First off, most of us are wise to Apple. Their newest product is hyped as the most AMAZING thing ever, but the first generation of it is never really ready for prime time. If you want an Apple Watch, you’ll get a better product at a cheaper price in a year or two. In our poll, 20 percent said “talk to me when it’s cheaper.” That would be the “smart” part of getting a smartwatch.
But that still leaves a majority who don’t really see the appeal. “I prefer to stay low-tech” garnered 34 percent of the vote. Note that these people voted in an Internet poll. That number might go up once the horse and buggy arrive with the write-in votes.
And the leading response, with 40 percent of the vote: “I don’t want to wear my gadgets.” I don’t know if it’s the feeling that our personal space is being violated or just the desire for sweat-free wrists, but there is a difference between having tech in your pocket and having it on your skin.
Besides, why would we give up one of the perks of owning smartphones? We made a deal: Corporations track our every move, and in exchange we don’t have to use germ-infested pay phones or wear watches to tell time. Fair is fair.
So count me out, too. At least until they come up with the Apple Brain Implant. THAT will be amazing.
