SEATTLE — In spite of gallant pitching performances by Cole McKisson and Will Smith, the Thunderbirds managed just two hits against a pair of Mercer Island pitchers in the 3A state championship game at Husky Ballpark.
Josh Stenberg’s walk-off homer in the 13th gave the Islanders the championship.
The game was interrupted by a bizarre sequence of events in the eighth inning in which Mercer Island appeared to win the game on a bases-loaded walk.
But Shorewood second baseman Steffen Torgersen correctly appealed to the second base umpire that Mercer Island’s runner never made it to third base.
After a 20-minute conference, the umpires called the runner out and ordered the game to continue.
