Njadoe wins four events to lead Scots to team title

TACOMA — Shorecrest junior Wurrie Njadoe accomplished one of the more rare feats in high school track and field Saturday, winning a state championship in all four individual events she entered.

Njadoe followed her victory in the 2A high jump on Friday with wins in the long jump and the 100- and 200-meter runs Saturday.

“It’s incredible,” Njadoe said. “I’ve been waiting for this meet since the season started. I wasn’t expecting to get first in all of them.”

Njadoe’s day was made even better by the fact she and her teammates earned the 2A girls team championship. The Scots finished with 57 points, edging Sehome by two points.

Shorecrest head coach Brandon Christensen said he wasn’t sure his team could catch Sehome and Pullman, which finished third, but Njadoe’s four championships — along with senior Katherine Taylor’s championship in the javelin — turned out to be the boost the Scots needed.

“It just turned out that today things went our way,” Christensen said.

Taylor’s throw of 136 feet, 8 inches in the javelin finals set a school record.

Njadoe jumped 18-9 to win the long jump and ran a 12.06 seconds in the 100 and an even 25.0 in the 200. The 200 was her fourth and final win.

“I was like, ‘Wait, did I really just win four events,’” Njadoe said. “But I’m really honored and grateful. The competition here was hard, but I’m really glad I pulled through toward the end.”

With her four victories, Njadoe accounted for 40 of Shorecrest’s 57 points.

“She’s here because she has that intrinsic motivation, but also because of the support she gets from her teammates,” Christensen said of Njadoe. “They’re out there supporting her during workouts and they’re running and jumping just as hard as she is during them. We have really, really, really good team chemistry that we can push each other.”

Like Christensen, Njadoe credited the rest of the team for its state championship.

“We all believed in each other, everybody contributed,” she said. “I’m just really grateful towards my teammates.”
