PORT ANGELES — More than $1 million in grants approved by Clallam County commissioners are pending after the county’s treasurer said she would withhold payment until a judge had determined whether the money was legally disbursed.
The Peninsula Daily News reports that three county commissioners this month awarded a $1 million grant to the Port of Port Angeles to complete a recycling center and nearly $290,000 to the city of Port Angeles for waterfront improvements.
Clallam County Treasurer Selinda Barkhuis called for a judicial review of the actions. She earlier said county policy and state law required the board to hold a public hearing before awarding those grants from a specific fund.
County Administrator Jim Jones says the board acted completely within state law and on legal advice.
