Tuesday news and notes

Max Whitt (Granite Falls, Everett Community College) was named an NAIA All-America honorable mention Monday after helping Lewis-Clark State College to its 17th national championship.

Whitt, who started the season at shortstop before flip-flopping with second baseman Cabe Reiten midway through the season for the Warriors, finished the season with 17 home runs. That total tied for fifth in the NAIA and ranked among the top 20 in program history.

Whitt hit .298 with 72 RBI to go along with the 17 homers, playing in 57 of the Warriors’ 58 games.

He also went 6-for-24 (.250) with two home runs and six RBI in LCSC’s six games in the NAIA World Series, scoring eight runs.

But his biggest contribution to the Warriors’ first NAIA championship since 2008 was a two-run single up the middle that drove in the tying and go-ahead runs in a six-run eighth inning that saw LCSC erase a 7-1 deficit against St. Thomas.

Galgano transferring to UW

Alex Galgano, a Seattle native that attended Archbishop Murphy, is transferring to Washington from Bellevue College, UW announced Tuesday.

UW lists Galgano as a utility player. He was named to the All-NWAC first team at Bellevue after hitting .359 with a home run, 13 RBI and a team-best 23 runs scored in 23 games. He hit .441 as a freshman at Bellevue.

“Alex is a gamer that will do anything to get on the field and is the guy you want up with the game on the line,” Huskies coach Lindsay Meggs told GoHuskies.com. “Alex has the confidence to step in right away and I have no doubt that he can handle Pac-12 pitching. This guy is a grinder.”

Galgano was a three-year letter winner at Archbishop Murphy and was named to the All-Cascade Conference first team three times. He hit .420 as a senior in 2013 and helped his team to the Class 2A state championship game.
