What: Lilium martagon is an easy to grow species of lily that’s a delight in the garden. In summer mature bulbs can produce from 30 to 50 small pendant blooms that curl open to a turban shape. The bulbs can produce flowers that are either pink or white; both colors are speckled inside with dark maroon spots. It is one of the few lilies that will thrive in light or open shade. Bulbs can be planted from fall through early spring. These lilies can be cut to the ground in autumn once the foliage begins to yellow. They can naturalize in favorable sites. Control slugs and snails to protect new growth in the spring and any young seedlings that have appeared.
Where: Martagon lilies prefer a site with rich moist to well-drained or sandy soil, although they will tolerate clay if the drainage is adequate. Grow in a location with full sun to light or open shade. Provide regular to occasional watering during dry weather.
Size: Reaches a height of 3 feet with a spread of a foot.
