Volunteers needed in Henry M. Jackson, Wild Sky and Alpine Lakes wildernesses

Do you like being outside? Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest could use your help. There are volunteer opportunities this summer in the Wild Sky, Henry M. Jackson and Alpine Lakes wilderness areas.

Forest Service staff will train volunteers in low-impact recreational skills, natural history and backcountry management. Training dates are from June 30 to July 5. Volunteers will commit to work three weekend days from July 12 to Sept. 13 on four of the most popular trails and sites in the Skykomish District.

There are three roles for volunteers.

Wilderness steward: Assist in the management of the Alpine Lakes, Wild Sky and Henry M. Jackson Wilderness areas. Educate visitors about wilderness regulations and backcountry ethics. Assist with site restoration and re-vegetation efforts. Remove illegal fire rings, pack out trash and perform light trail maintenance.

Trailhead host: Greet visitors at trailheads and provide information on leave-no-trace skills, campsite locations, sensitive areas and forest regulations. Collect data on visitor use.

Visitor information/interpretive steward: Assist front desk staff with public service and provide information to a wide range of visitors and groups. Lead interpretive hikes at the Deception Falls Picnic Area. Educate Forest visitors to gain public cooperation to protect resources from damage and pollution.
