To plan ahead for all those patriotic brake lights, head over to the Washington State Department of Transportation website. You’ll find traffic volume charts to help time your travel on key routes.
For U.S. 2 holiday travel, traffic eastbound from Stevens Pass to Leavenworth is expected to be relatively light. Coming back, expect the worst stop-and-go traffic between Leavenworth and Stevens Pass at the noon hour on July 5. The best bets for light traffic coming back are before 10 a.m. or after 9 p.m.
Ferry reservations are strongly recommended on routes to the San Juan Islands, Sidney, B.C., and Port Townsend.
