Alex Jackson’s HR carries AquaSox to 5-3 win

EVERETT — Alex Jackson picked a good time to hit his first home run for the Everett AquaSox.

Jackson hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning, giving the Sox a 5-3 victory over the Boise Hawks on Tuesday night at Everett Memorial Stadium.

Jackson, the Seattle Mariners’ first-round pick in the 2014 amateur draft and the consensus No. 1 prospect in the Mariners organization, was homerless in his first 10 games with Everett. But he went the opposite way on the first pitch he saw from Boise reliever Taylor Black, taking it over the scoreboard in right-center to snap a 3-3 tie.

Jackson’s homer finished off a four-run rally that saw Everett overcome a 3-1 deficit. It was the second straight day the Sox put together a big inning late in the game to turn defeat into victory.

Corey Simpson finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles for Everett (10-3). His two-run single immediately preceding Jackson’s homer tied the score. The Sox also received excellent pitching from relievers Spencer Herrmann and Troy Scott, who combined to finish the game with six scoreless innings.

Boise (5-8) received three hits apiece from Hamlet Marte and Brian Carroll, as well as home runs from Yonathan Daza and Kevin Padlo.

Short hops

There were many sad sentiments expressed by Northwest League veterans around Everett Memorial Stadium regarding the destruction of Eugene Civic Stadium. Civic Stadium, which was built in 1938 and housed the Eugene Emeralds from 1969-2009, was destroyed by fire Monday. …Boise pitcher Tyler Matzek, a major leaguer who was on the Hawks’ roster at the start of the series against Everett, has been sent home for a mental break. Matzek, who began the season in the Colorado Rockies’ starting rotation, has been dealing with an epic loss of control. The 2009 first-round draft pick was sent to the minors after walking 19 in 22 innings with the Rockies. The control issues only got worse in the minors, culminating in an appearance at Eugene last Wednesday when he recorded just one out while walking five batters and hitting another.
