SEATTLE — Archaeologists are cataloging artifacts dating back to the 1700s that were found under a Seattle bridge by construction workers.
KOMO-TV reported construction began on a water storage tank under the Magnolia Bridge last year and workers recently found items including an old Seattle Municipal Railway token and a centuries-old Chinese coin.
Project archaeologist Alicia Valentino says this find is special because it’s one of Seattle’s smaller shantytowns. She said immigrants settled in the community after arriving in Smith Cove between 1911 and 1941.
King County Wastewater Treatment environmental and community services manager Chris Townsend says consultants are always on hand for these types of projects to assess any potential historic finds.
The items will be on display at the Burke Museum once archeologists have cleaned and analyzed them.
