The letter from Mr. Rohrberg on free trade caught my eye in Monday’s Herald. (“Need to keep companies here.”) The Raleigh Co. was founded in the latter part of the 19th century in Nottingham, England. I have owned an English-made racing bicycle and my first motorcycle was a 1933 Raleigh. This beast had a single cylinder 598 cc engine and would kick back like a mule if the ignition was too far advanced while trying to kick start it. The Raleigh Co. has passed through many hands over the years and is currently owned by Accell Group NV, a Dutch company.
The current USA trade deficit with Canada is around 1.1 percent, so we’re evenly matched partners in export/import between the two countries.
