What: Acer pseudoplanta, or “Eskimo Sunset,” is a deciduous highly variegated tree that is an excellent selection where space is a concern. Standing underneath an Eskimo Sunset tree reminds one of gazing up at a sunlit stained glass window. Its variegation is superb, with colors ranging from apricot to pink, tan and green. The leaf tops are mottled green and vanilla, changing to pinks and orange veining, while the underside is purple. Plant it in a spot that allows for walking underneath for the best experience. It will take your breath away.
Sun or shade: Plant it in full sun to part shade.
Size: In 10 years, this shrub will reach 10 feet tall and have a 10-foot spread.
See it: In the Urban Tree Walk on the west side of the parking lot at the Evergreen Arboretum &Gardens, 145 Alverson Blvd., Everett. www.evergreen arboretum.com
