SEATTLE — A Navy sailor who beat an immigrant taxi driver and told him to “go back to your own country” has been sentenced to six months in jail.
The Seattle Times reported that Jesse Fleming was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty last month to second-degree assault and malicious harassment.
King County prosecutors had recommended a nine-month sentence plus a year of community supervision.
The taxi driver, Adan Gaal, asked the judge to impose the maximum sentence. Fleming apologized to Gaal during the hearing.
Gaal is an immigrant from Somalia but has lived in Seattle for 15 years.
Fleming repeatedly punched Gaal in the face, knocked him unconscious and broke his nose during the Dec. 7 attack. Fleming called Gaal a terrorist and threatened to shoot him.
