CHIIMACUM, Wash. — An area of spiritual significance to the S’Kallam people has been added to the Washington state register of historic places.
Tamanowas Rock is located on an 82-acre parcel of land about 10 miles south of Port Townsend.
The Peninsula Daily News reported making the state list if the first step toward federal recognition.
The Jefferson Land Trust purchased the land in 2010 and resold it to the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe in 2013. The tribe says the area has been used by native peoples for vision quests for a long time.
The rock is a monolith with caves, crevices and cliffs. It was in private hands until the trust bought the site with plans for preservation.
