Front Porch: Public meeting set for levy

A public meeting is planned for July 8 regarding the proposed renewal of the Camano Island emergency medical services levy.

The event hosted by the Camano Island Chamber of Commerce and the Camano Center runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at 606 Arrowhead Road.

The current EMS levy ends in December. The department is asking voters to approve another six years at the same rate, 50 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value.

The EMS levy generates about $1.5 million a year, nearly a third of the district’s annual budget. The money is used for paramedic staffing and vehicles, and medical supplies and equipment.

Speakers for the July 8 event include Fire Chief Mike Schick. The public is encouraged to come and ask questions.

Register in time to vote: Monday is the last day to register to vote by mail or online in time for the Aug. 4 primary election.

To register online or to update an existing registration, go to www.vote.wa.gov. Registration forms also are available at local libraries and post offices.

To be eligible to vote in Washington, a person must be: at least 18 years old; a U.S. citizen; have lived in Washington for at least 30 days; not have any disqualifying court order; and not be under state supervision for a felony conviction.
