Sox notes: Former Shorewood star Mitsui faces AquaSox

Among those on Hillsboro’s roster is Shorewood High School graduate Trevor Mitsui. Mitsui, a 22-year-old first baseman who graduated from Shorewood in 2011, spent three seasons at the University of Washington before being selected in the 30th round of the 2014 amateur draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He had a big season last year in his first as a professional, batting .330 with 12 homers and 52 RBI in 68 games in the rookie Pioneer League. He came into Saturday night’s game batting .176 with one homer in 14 games with the Hops.

Mitsui hit a two-run home run in the first inning on Saturday night in front of the hometown crowd.

Rotation change

The Sox made a change to their starting rotation Saturday, giving right-hander Darin Gillies the start in place of left-hander Taylor Byrd. Gillies, who was primarily a reliever at Arizona State University this spring, allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings of relief prior to Saturday’s start. Everett manager Rob Mummau said the move was made because the organization believes Byrd, who struggled in three starts as he walked 13 in 12 innings, may be better out of the bullpen.

Contacts curse

There was something eerie about the fourth inning of Everett’s game Friday at Tri-City. Second baseman Logan Taylor had to be replaced prior to the start of the bottom of the fourth inning because of an issue with his contact lenses. Then during the bottom of the fourth Sox first baseman Ryan Uhl also had a problem with his contacts and had to be replaced. Both were able to return to the lineup Saturday.
