STANWOOD — Two local fire departments have measures on the Aug. 4 primary ballot.
One is about funding, while the other is about housekeeping.
Camano Island Fire and Rescue is asking voters to renew the emergency medical services levy at the same rate for another six years.
“It’s not a new tax. It’s a renewal. It’s critical for operations,”Assistant Chief Levon Yengoyan said Wednesday.
The current levy will expire in December if it is not renewed. It collects 50 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value. The average homeowner’s bill is $130.
The levy generates $1.5 million a year.
Island County primary election ballots are being mailed out this week.
Meanwhile, in Snohomish County, the Stanwood-based North County Regional Fire Authority, is asking voters to approve the dissolution of two old fire districts.
Fire Districts 14 and 18 were combined years ago to form the fire authority, but by law, they still exist and both must keep separate records.
If the change is approved, the agency would move toward having an odd number of commissioners, likely five or seven compared to the current board of six members.
