Everett Guard soldier runs bike ‘shop’ in Afghanistan
FOB FENTY, Afghanistan — Washington Army National Guard Spc. Ayla Scott, of Everett, is serving with the 40th Combat Aviation Brigade in Afghanistan.
When she’s not sent on expeditionary missions to refuel attack helicopters, however, Scott is offering up her services as a bicycle mechanic.
Scott, who was born in Montana and joined the Idaho National Guard, learned how to repair bicycles after moving to Everett and working at a sports shop.
Then Scott, eager to deploy, took a refueler role with the Guard and arrived in Camp Buehring, Kuwait. At camp, she quickly saw a way she also could put her civilian skill sets to work.
“On base there are people riding bikes everywhere,” Scott said. She soon had more work requests on bicycles than she could meet.
At the end of April, Scott accepted a temporary forward assignment from Kuwait to Forward Operating Base Fenty in Afghanistan. She soon was working to set up another bike “shop” like she ran in Kuwait. The charitable effort takes “payment” in the form of donated bike parts.
“Running a bicycle shop is one of my dream jobs,” Scott said. “I have to do it again.”
