Candidate filing for the August primary and November general election starts Monday, but a few candidates already have filed by mail.
That’s because candidates have been able to send filing papers by mail as long as they arrived at either the Snohomish County auditor’s office or the secretary of state’s office after May 2.
Candidates file online or in person during official filing week, May 16-20.
Most candidates file online because online filing gives them control over information.
Snohomish County Elections Director Garth Fell said Washington keeps the early mail-filing period for candidates who may not have internet access or may be away from normal internet access.
Online filing and in-person filing are essentially the same because candidates who come to an elections office are directed to a computer for filing. That makes in-person filing at the auditor’s office and at the secretary of state’s office the same because a filing at one gets sent to the other. Filing for congressional, statewide and legislative district offices is the responsibility of the secretary of state’s office; county and superior court offices are the responsibility of the county auditor’s office as is filing for precinct committee officer.
