LYNNWOOD — Prosecutors on Tuesday charged two men with murder in connection with a 11-year-old deadly shooting near Lake Stickney.
Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies arrested Bunthoeum Nem and Youthy Chim on Friday. The men are suspects in the 2005 shooting death of Jesse Williams, 31.
Detectives believe that Williams planned to meet the men to buy marijuana. Instead, he was shot in the chest and robbed while seated in his friend’s car.
Prosecutors on Tuesday charged Nem and Chim with first-degree murder with a firearm. Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Matt Hunter filed the Everett District Court charges under the theory that Williams was killed during a robbery.
Hunter has until June 24 to refile the charges into Superior Court. The defendants were being held on $1 million bail.
Witnesses told police that the men were panicked because they owed money to their drug suppliers, and their marijuana was seized during a raid in Mukilteo a few days before Williams was killed.
Detectives believe Nem, 37, fired the fatal shots after luring Williams to a drug deal that was planned as a robbery. Chim, 34, has admitted to being Nem’s driver that day, according to court papers.
