About Newspapers in Education

Mission Statement:
The Daily Herald's Newspaper in Education (NIE) program is committed to creating lifelong learners and readers through local teachers in North Puget Sound. The goals include promoting youth literacy, encouraging the pursuit of educational excellence, creating active members of the community and producing involved citizens in the democratic process.
About:
The Herald's NIE program helps students understand our changing world and provides a creative way to practice reading, writing and critical thinking. Having the newspaper as an interactive text inside the classroom provides a real-world look at our community, promotes youth literacy and better prepares our children to become active members of society and future leaders in our community.
NIE is one of the most exciting educational tools available today. The Herald provides local schools with newspapers at no cost to the school. Funding for this program is subsidized heavily by The Herald and the rest is covered through the generous donations of our readers.
