EVERETT — Police say it will be up to prosecutors to determine if a man’s death after a fight in downtown Everett last month involved a crime.
Jeremy R. See, 32, died from head injuries just days after the fight. Last week, his death was ruled a homicide by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Everett detectives have declined to release additional information about what they believe happened. They say their investigation is ongoing.
See’s family has reported that on Oct. 26 he was attending a Narcotics Anonymous meeting at the Firewheel Community Coffeehouse on Colby Avenue. He and his ex-girlfriend went outside to talk about relationship issues.
At that point, police say a 35-year-old man who was the woman’s friend got involved in the discussion. A fist fight broke out between the two men. Neither was armed.
When police arrived, both men had injuries, but See’s were much more serious. He was taken to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett, where he later died.
See’s family has created a public Facebook page, “Justice for Jeremy.” Through the page, they issued a statement saying they believe he struck his head while falling during the fight. They described him as a caring and giving man whose organs have been donated to help others live.
The family said See had been sober for some time. In August, he had gotten off probation after several years, according to the state Department of Corrections. See was in state prison from 2011 to mid-2012 for a sex crime, court records show.
The name of the other man involved in the fight has not been released by police. He has not been arrested.
Homicide is a medical determination that a death was the result of another’s actions. It is not a legal finding. In death investigations where there is an allegation of self-defense, it is common for prosecutors to conduct a legal review before making a decision on criminal charges. That process often takes several months.
