Throwback Thursday: Courthouse burns down

On Aug. 3, 1909, the Snohomish County Courthouse burned to the ground.

The fire started down the block, when sparks from the J.K. Healy blacksmith shop ignited a pile of hay on the floor, according to HistoryLink.org. The shop lit up in flames, and soon a gust of wind carried the fire northwest, building after building, until it reached the wooden courthouse.

Everett firefighters were understaffed and without an adequate water supply. Neighboring fire departments arrived too late. In all, 12 buildings were lost.

The new courthouse was built in the same place, where it has stood for over 100 years. Learn more about it here.

Throwback Thursday: The Pittsburgh of the West

Due to a great potential for industry, Everett in its early days was called “the city of smokestacks” and “the Pittsburgh of the West.”

To be specific, it was referred to as “the Pittsburg of the West” — without the ‘h’ at the end — as you can see in the bottom right of this 1902 photo of the Everett waterfront. This is because Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania dropped the 'h’ at the end of its name between 1890 and 1911.
