TALKING POINTS

A six-minute span of the first period could prove costly for Everett.

First, Spokane scored four times during that span to take a 4-0 lead and put this one to bed early.

Then, when the score was 1-0, Everett lost workhorse defenseman Ben Betker to an apparent arm injury after he was crunched into the boards. Betker left the game and did not return.

The loss is costly because the split of the first two games...

TALKING POINTS

What got into Carson Stadnyk at the start of the third period?

Everett found itself trailing 1-0 after two periods, but Stadnyk scored three goals in a span of 3:46 during the first 4:03 of the third to turn the game on a dime. I have no idea what the WHL record is for fastest natural hat trick in the playoffs, but I've got to think this is close.

(Edited to add: Thanks to Travis Huntington we know it isn't the...

So the Everett vs. Spokane series should be a rout, right? After all, it pits the first-place team from the U.S. Division against the fourth-place team, and those teams were separated by 23 points in the standings. Therefore, the Tips should breeze through, shouldn't they?

Well, as Lee Corso likes to say, not so fast my friend.

Spokane finished with a pedestrian .500 record. But that's largely because the Chiefs went through a bad patch in January when overage...

I'm not a homer. I make a deliberate attempt to be as objective as possible in my reporting on the Silvertips. But I'm going to go on a bit of a rant here.

The WHL released its all-conference teams and awards nominees today, and despite Everett winning the U.S. Division there is ZERO Silvertips presence. Zip. Nada. Not a single first- or second-team all-conference selection, not...

TALKING POINTS

The long wait is over, and another banner will finally be unfurled at Xfinity Arena.

The point gained from the shootout loss to Victoria, combined with Portland's 6-3 loss at Seattle, means Everett is the 2014-15 U.S. Division champion. The title is Everett's first since 2007, when the Tips won 54 games and also claimed the Scotty Munro Trophy for the league's best record.

However, this team is far different from those...

It's sort of the calm before the storm as the Tips have the weekdays off before finishing the season with a flourish with the weekend's three-in-three. In the meantime I have a couple things I want to discuss about the season Everett has had, and I'll tackle one of those today.

Let's talk about the offense. If you remember, the main question surrounding Everett heading into the season was about whether the Tips would be able to score. Everett lost four of its top five...

TALKING POINTS

We have a race again.

Everett treated the sellout crowd at Xfinity Arena to a high-quality performance that included a 20-1 shots advantage in the first period, and Portland lost to Prince George 6-5 in a shootout. That means the Tips' lead over the Winterhawks for first place in the U.S. Division is back to the four points it was prior to Wednesday's debacle. Portland still controls its own destiny, because if both teams win out...

TALKING POINTS

The big showdown for supremacy in the U.S. Division never really materialized. Portland was the far better team tonight, and now the Winterhawks are in control of the race for the U.S. Division title. Everett still holds a two point lead over the Winterhawks, but given the schedules -- Portland has two games in hand and an easier slate of opponents -- it's tough to see a scenario where the Winterhawks don't claim their third straight...
