ARLINGTON — The Arlington girls soccer team defeated Mercer Island 4-3 on penalty kicks Tuesday night in the first round of the Class 3A state tournament.
Senior forward Kirsten Phillips notched Arlington’s only goal in regulation. Mercer Island scored on a penalty kick from senior Nalani Ogawa.
Arlington coach Nathan Davis said his team is accustomed to playing close games.
“You know that when you’re a defensive minded team, you’re going to have games like that,” he said.
The Eagles move on to play Seattle Prep in a quarterfinal at 7 p.m. Saturday. Seattle Prep defeated Central Kitsap 6-0 Tuesday night.
Murphy tops Tumwater
TUMWATER — Archbishop Murphy beat Tumwater 5-4 in a shootout to win its Class 2A state playoff game Tuesday night.
The contest was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation.
Murphy’s Madison Long tied the game 1-1 with a goal in the 62nd minute.
The Wildcats’ then got penalty kick goals from Talia Daigle, Gabi Koch, Reagan Hupp, Emily Schwartz and Lexie Klaudt, to pull out the win.
Murphy (14-6-1) advances to the quarterfinals. The Wildcats will play the winner of Wednesday’s first-round game between Clarkston and Fife.
