SNOHOMISH — A high-speed crash into a tree near Snohomish sent one driver to the hospital with serious injuries Friday night, 1 mile from where another high speed crash killed a driver earlier that day, firefighters said.
Around 10:50 p.m. Friday, first responders from Snohomish Fire District No. 4 and Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue responded to a report of a high-speed collision involving a car and tree at the 4000 block of S. Machias Road.
Initial reports said the driver was pinned under the dash and the car was on fire. Deputies from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office arrived first, knocking down the fire with two dry chemical fire extinguishers.
Firefighters extinguished the rest of the fire, and used the Jaws of Life to free the injured driver. It took nine firefighters 20 minutes to free the victim.
The driver was taken by ambulance to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett with serious injuries. The sheriff’s office is investigating the crash.
Shortly before 1 p.m. Friday, Snohomish firefighters responded to a head-on collision on the 11100 block of Bunk Foss Road that killed one driver.
Excessive speed was a factor in both crashes, said Sean Witherow, battalion chief for Snohomish Fire District No. 4.
“Both tragedies could have been avoided if drivers had slowed down and driven at the posted speed limit,” Witherow said in a release.
