In true Acura fashion, the 2017 RDX luxury compact sports utility vehicle is better than its predecessor. Which was better than the one prior. Which was better than the previous.
Getting my drift?
Even in between major redesigns, the folks at Acura do not rest on their laurels. Last year the RDX received a more powerful and fuel-efficient engine and an expanded list of AcuraWatch safety and driver-assistive technologies, among others.
This year, the bar is raised with the addition of two new exterior colors: Lunar Silver Metallic and Modern Steel Metallic. The interior comes with a standard premium black trim package, second-row air conditioning vents, power tailgate and multi-view rearview camera.
Nothing earth shattering, but considering that includes layer upon layer of improvements from previous years, it all adds up.
My tester was all-wheel drive and included a “Tech Package,” “Advance Package” and “AcuraWatch Plus Package” that load the RDX with all the bells and whistles the mind can conjure – and then some.
Advance Package features a grade-exclusive machined alloy wheel with grey painted surfaces along with a host of added luxury features including rainsensing wipers, front fog lights, remote engine start, front- and rear-parking sensors, ventilated front seats and an auto-dimming driver’s side mirror.
While offered as standard equipment on the new
Advance Package, all 2017 RDX models can be equipped with the AcuraWatch suite of technologies that includes adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation braking system with forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist and lane-departure warning. The 2016 RDX received top-in-class safety ratings – a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration – a rating expected to carry over to this model.
RDX is powered by a 3.5-liter, SOHC, 24-valve, V6 engine that generates 279-horsepower. It’s paired to a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. It provides strong acceleration, precise steering and a comfy ride for up to five adults. The EPA rates the RDX fuel economy at 22 miles per gallon for combined city/highway driving.
The engine’s variable cylinder management deactivation system allows for the shut down of three of the engine’s six cylinders under light engine loads, increasing efficiency.
Personally, I enjoyed the 410-watt audio system with 10 speakers, a CD player, AM/FM/XM radio with Note function, Bluetooth, USB port and speed volume control. The navigation system includes voice recognition and real-time traffic with traffic rerouting. That’s always a bonus when it comes to Seattle driving.
The RDX transforms from passenger and cargo hauling with the aid of one-touch activation of the 60/40 split-folding rear seats. That drops passenger capacity to two, but provides 76.9 cubic feet of storage in the rear cargo area. Interior storage compartments include a large center console between the front seats, and numerous other storage pockets and cubby spaces throughout.
