The Boeing Co. dropped to 34 from 27 on the Fortune 500 list of America’s biggest companies for 2008.
Exxon grabbed the top slot from Wal-Mart, which slid to two.
Chicago-based Boeing came in behind Costco, which is based in Issaquah, at 24. But the aerospace company beat out Microsoft, which came in 35. However, Redmond-based Microsoft actually moved up, from 44, rather than dropping as Boeing did.
Boeing’s ranking, no doubt, was affected by its Dreamliner delays and its Machinists’ strike last fall, which contributed to a fourth quarter loss.
Boeing did grab the top ranking for aerospace and defense companies, beating out United Technologies (the No. 1 in 2007) and Lockheed Martin. Boeing’s rival for the tanker contest, Northrop Grumman, came in at 5.
