The Boeing Co. and Kenya Airways have reached an agreement over the delayed delivery of nine 787 jets, the airline said Thursday.
Kenya Airways signed a purchase agreement in 2006 for nine 787-8s and options for four more. Boeing was to deliver Kenya Airways’ first 787 in October 2010. That delivery has been pushed back to the fourth quarter of 2013, the carrier said in a statement Thursday.
Boeing’s 787 program has suffered several setbacks and is more than three years behind schedule. The company hopes to deliver its first 787 to launch customer All Nippon Airways of Japan later this year.
“The 787 Dreamliner fits well with our expansion strategy, giving us an opportunity to expand our markets beyond the current offering while cementing our mandate of connecting Africa to the World and World to Africa,” said Dr. Titus Naikuni, CEO of Kenya Airways.
The 787s will be used to replace the carrier’s aging 767s.
