EVERETT — A Burlington construction firm was awarded a $7.6 million contract this week to build roads, utilities and public access features for the new Fisherman’s Harbor district in Waterfront Place Central.
The Port of Everett Commission on Tuesday chose Interwest Construction to build Seiner Drive and 14th Street roadways, the Esplanade trail system in Fisherman’s Harbor and the Pacific Rim Plaza.
The firm also will provide landscaping for all the public spaces and install a new pipeline in the City of Everett’s Puget Sound stormwater infrastructure within the site.
Fisherman’s Harbor is the first 12 acres of the 65-acre Waterfront Place Central, a makeover of the central waterfront to bring homes, shops and restaurants to the area.
Fisherman’s Harbor district is envisioned to include 265 apartments, a 135-room hotel, five commercial buildings and several retail and waterfront restaurant spaces. The Port has recruited a housing developer and a hotelier for the project, but is still finalizing agreements with both.
The key public features of the Fisherman’s Harbor include: a continuous public trail, a dock walk for visitors to get down to the water, a small boat course and Pacific Rim Plaza that aims to pay tribute to the city’s seaport.
The Port hopes to have developers on board by the end of the year with construction going up in 2017.
Overall, the Waterfront Place Central project is expected to include 15 new public gathering spaces, up to 660 housing units, two waterfront hotels, at least 10 fine and casual dining restaurants, and 662,000 square feet of commercial, retail and marine sales and services.
When finished, the Port hopes the Waterfront Place Central project will support more than 2,000 jobs.
In August, the Port awarded a $4.4 million contract to Astoria, Oregon-based Bergerson Construction for the marine elements of Fisherman’s Harbor.
That work, scheduled to begin Oct. 3, includes the removal and reconstruction of the southern-most bulkhead in Fisherman’s Harbor, construction of a new overwater timber wharf to moor commercial fishing vessels and the platform for the Pacific Rim Splash Fountain Plaza.
It will also include an access pier that will eventually connect to a new guest moorage facility at the base of Fisherman’s Harbor.
