Google Inc. has announced a major partnership for its Glass wearable device with Luxottica Group SpA, the company behind several popular eyewear brands that include Ray-Ban and Oakley.
The Mountain View, Calif., tech giant said Luxottica will lend Glass its expertise in eyewear design and manufacturing. Additionally, Luxottica’s thousands of retail locations should help Google later on, when the tech company begins to sell Glass to the general public.
Among the other brands made by Luxottica are Vogue Eyewear, Persol, Oliver Peoples, Alain Mikli and Arnette. But to start, Google said it will be focusing on bringing Glass together with Luxottica’s Oakley and Ray-Ban brands.
Google did not say when users will be able to buy branded versions of Glass.
“You’re not going to see Glass on your favorite Oakleys or Ray-Bans tomorrow, but today marks the start of a new chapter in Glass’s design,” Google said in a post. “Excited? Because we definitely are.”
This is the second major partnership announced for Google Glass. At the start of this year, Google announced it had begun working with vision-insurance company VSP.
