STANWOOD — The Stanwood Camano News was purchased earlier this month by Pioneer News Group, a family-owned chain which also publishes the Skagit Valley Herald and the Anacortes American.
The 122-year-old weekly newspaper already had been run under a management agreement by Pioneer since owner and publisher Dave Pinkham retired five years ago.
“We know the operation,” said Mike Gugliotto, Pioneer’s president and CEO. “We kind of share the same thoughts and philosophy on how to run a community newspaper.”
Kelly Ruhoff will continue as the editor and general manager for the newspaper. Skagit Valley Herald Publisher Heather Hernandez also will serve as the Stanwood Camano News publisher, Gugliotto said.
Pioneer, based in Seattle, owns newspapers in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah and Montana. The Stanwood Camano News, with a circulation of 2,200, fits the profile of many of the company’s newspapers, Gugliotto said.
“It’s a good positive acquisition for us,” Gugliotto said. “It’s a natural fit.”
Pioneer and Skagit Publishing are owned by the Wood family, including Leighton Wood and Susan (Scripps) Wood who lived in Mount Vernon but have recently moved to Seattle.
