EVERETT — Troopers believe impaired driving may be to blame in separate crashes Thursday night that killed a bicyclist on Island County and sent a motorcyclist to a hospital in Snohomish County.
A man riding a bicycle died when he was struck by a car near Freeland, the Washington State Patrol reported. The crash was reported around 9:15 p.m. in the 5100 block of East Harbor Road.
The bicyclist, 58, died at the scene, troopers said. He was identified as Randall L. Lorraine, of Langley.
Troopers said the bicyclist was riding eastbound on the right shoulder when an eastbound car driven by a 52-year-old Sedro Woolley man drove onto the shoulder and hit him.
The driver was booked into the Island County Jail for investigation of vehicular homicide. He was not injured. Troopers said they believe alcohol played a role in the crash.
Two hours later, a Seattle man was arrested for investigation of vehicular assault, hit and run and two Washington State Department of Corrections parole violations. He was booked into the Snohomish County Jail.
Troopers said he was turning off Highway 92 onto 147th Avenue NE near Lake Stevens when he made a left turn in front of a motorcycle.
The motorcycle rider — a Granite Falls man, 48 — was unable to stop and struck the pickup, troopers reported. He was taken to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett with serious injuries.
The pickup driver was given a blood test with lab results pending, according to an arrest report.
