2025 Ram 1500 Rebel is worthy of raves

The full-size pickup dressed for outdoor adventure grabs attention.

Ram’s 1500 full-size pickup gets a substantial update for 2025, including a powertrain revision eliminating the V8 and ushering in two all-new, more powerful and more efficient twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engines. The standard 3.0-liter six delivers 420 horsepower while the high-output version bumps it up to 540 horsepower.

The previous TRX model is gone, and a new Tungsten model piled high with special features sits atop the 2025 Ram 1500 lineup.

Minor exterior revisions for 2025 keep the 1500 looking fresh, and upgrades to the infotainment system help keep it competitive.

The mid-level Laramie model is generally seen as the best bet for a good balance between standard equipment and pricing, with varying degrees of opulence or penury as you move up or down the scale.

I drove the Rebel model, best described as a Laramie with standard four-wheel drive and outfitted for driving off-pavement on rough-and-tumble dirt roads. This Ram 1500 can go adventuring into the Cascades along forest service roads too intimidating for regular trucks. Meanwhile it doesn’t make a fool of itself on a paved highway. The standard output six-cylinder engine propels the Rebel forcefully like it’s no big deal.

Like all Ram 1500 models, the Rebel’s rear suspension has coil springs instead of leaf springs, which translates into a very comfortable ride. Thanks to other efforts by Ram engineers, the cab is also peaceful and quiet even at freeway speeds.

The enormity of a full-size pickup allows for a huge amount of cab space, so in addition to expansive room for all passengers inside the Ram 1500 Rebel Crew Cab, designers had enough left over to include lots of helpful stowage bins, cubbies, and cupholders. For transporting big stuff, there’s always the 5-foot-7-inch box outside the cab.

In spite of being a tough and capable truck, the Rebel’s interior is handsome and sophisticated.

Rebel’s EPA-estimated fuel economy rating is 17 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. For ultimate fuel economy, look for the new electric Ram 1500 REV.

If you like trucks, attention, and spontaneous interactions with random strangers, you’d love the Ram 1500 Rebel. Just make sure you get it with Hydro Blue paint, like the one I drove. Every single place I went during the week, all kinds of people raved about this truck. Rebel deserves the attention.
