You’d think the 516 horsepower and 611 pound-feet of torque supplied by the Mercedes-Benz electric EQS sedan would be more than enough. For the brand’s AMG high-performance subsidiary, those are fighting words.
AMG produced the Mercedes-AMG EQS, with 649 hp and 700 lb-ft, and there’s a boost function to briefly provide 751 hp and 752 lb-ft. The target market is people living on Powermad, a new planet in the solar system.
Pricing for the Mercedes EQS starts at $105,550. The Mercedes-AMG uses a pricing boost function to reach a $148,700 starting figure.
Beyond the AMG’s power increase, it gives the EQS a more dynamic appearance, suspension and steering upgrades, an inside air-quality filtration system, and so much more. There are optional features galore, for customizing the car and indulging in one’s comfort, convenience and bragging preferences.
The wild new MBUX Hyperscreen takes center stage inside the AMG. It occupies the entire length of the dashboard with three displays under a single 56-inch curved glass surface, harboring untold numbers of selections for controlling everything imaginable inside the car.
This setup is a breeding ground for frustration, but I managed fairly well. The “Hey Mercedes” voice command gets most of the credit. An eerie thing happened, though. Once when I got into the car, without having spoken any command, the voice said, “Sorry, something’s not right.” Wow. So now AI is capable of having insights into our personal lives?
The Mercedes-AMG EQS is 207 inches long and weighs 900 pounds more than an adult male rhinoceros. A rhino could never outrun the AMG, but the AMG could never do a 180-degree spin in a single jump, like the 5,000-pound rhino can. Two beautiful cumbersome beings, both agile in their own way.
