Don’t plan on taking a vacation at Baker Lake Resort this summer.
The popular campground between Swift and Park creeks on Baker Lake’s west side is closed this year for remodeling, Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest officials have announced.
It will reopen as Swift Creek Campground next year, with more open space and day-use features.
The Forest Service will add trails and group picnic areas will be added. The number of campsites will be reduced from 90 to 50, without water or power for RVs. All nine cabins have been removed as well. Ann Dunphy, recreation planner for the project, said the camp store, boat docks and swim beach will retain the feel of the original resort, which was built in 1935.
With fewer camping sites the overall impact on erosion, soil compaction and vegetation should be reduced, Dunphy said.
Over the years the resort has been run by a number of operators, most recently by Puget Sound Energy, but the Forest Service is taking over the business next year.
