When I heard there was a pizza place at the northeast corner of Everett and Colby avenues, I was perplexed: Where?
Sure enough, since 2004, A Pizza House has been
in business in the strip mall with the dull green and yellow signs — you know, the one that used to house the Everett Pack-Man shipping shop?
And it’s good pizza.
If you’re all about the toppings — piled on by the pound, not the ounce — this is the place for you.
Our Italian sausage, mushroom and black olive pizza was positively loaded with mozzarella and all the other toppings in good proportions.
Our custom vegetarian pizza with garlic, onion, green bell peppers and fresh tomatoes had serious heft, too.
If you normally need to eat three or four thin-crust pieces of pizza to get full, two of these bad boys might be enough for you.
They’re thick enough to eat with a fork, but also easy to eat by hand.
If you like a thin-crust New York-style or pizza magherita, this isn’t the place for you.
Crusts from A Pizza House are thick, baked in a pan, not quite deep-dish, somewhere in between Pizza Hut’s pan and hand-tossed crusts.
Reportedly made with fresh dough every day, the crust was not greasy, and neither were the toppings.
I found the center of the pizza to be a bit soggy to my taste, but it’s to be expected with such thickly laden toppings.
A Pizza House is a clean, well-lit, recently updated eclectic place.
Four tables and two stools perched at a window bar are inviting for dine-in eating, and a TV in the corner shows the local news.
Guests order at the counter and can choose extras from two well-stocked soda fridges, an ice cream treat cooler and a display of single-serving bags of chips.
Slices go for a mere $1.85, just the steal downtown Everett’s lunch crowd needs.
What really warmed me to A Pizza House was the exceptionally friendly service.
While I waited about 20 minutes for our take-out order, the woman behind the counter was warm and gracious.
When I asked about the restroom, she happily stopped what she was doing to make sure it was clean and fresh before she let me use it.
A Pizza House also offers pasta dishes, wings, calzones, toasted subs, gyros and fresh salads.
Walk-in one-topping specials are $5.99 for a small, $7.99 for medium, $9.99 for large and $11.99 for extra large, plus $1.35 to $2.15 for each additional topping.
Delivery prices for one-topping pizzas are $9.99 for a small, $11.99 for medium, $12.99 for large and $15.99 for extra large. Again, additional toppings cost extra.
Owner Gulshan Bavra said her customers’ favorite specialty pizzas ($20.99 for a large) include the House Special with pepperoni, bacon bits, Italian sausage, red onion, mushrooms and green peppers and the Meat Lovers with pepperoni, Italian sausage, salami, Canadian bacon and bacon bits.
Their most popular sub is the chicken Alfredo ($6.99) and the top salad is the Greek salad ($4.99 for a small and $7.99 for large).
