Genesis joins the luxury EV market with all-new 2023 GV60

Available in two different strengths, the compact crossover has tech to the hilt and a bit of magic.

The 2023 GV60 is the first fully electric vehicle from luxury brand Genesis. It’s a compact crossover, adding a third model to the Genesis SUV lineup.

Genesis did not go gently into the luxury EV market. The all-new GV60 has expressive, unconventional styling, a resplendent interior, and tech to the hilt.

There are two trim levels of the GV60: Advanced and Performance. Both of them have all-wheel drive, courtesy of two motors apiece.

The Advanced delivers 314 horsepower and 446 pound-feet of torque with a driving range of 248 miles. The Performance cranks it up to 429 horsepower and 516 pound-feet, but shrinks the range to 235 miles. A push button on its steering wheel puts the Performance into Boost Mode (hard not to think of Marshawn Lynch) and for 10 seconds 483 horsepower is available. For additional drama, there’s also a Drift Mode.

The GV60 charges from 10 percent to 80 percent in 18 minutes when plugged into a 250kW rapid charger. That’s a quick charge but the car’s somewhat limited range means more frequent recharging sessions.

With a $1,095 destination charge included, pricing starts at $60,385 for the Advanced trim and $69,385 for the Performance.

The first indication of beyond-the-norm technology is GV60’s electric door handles that automatically pop out when the driver approaches with smart key at hand. No key is even necessary to enter or start the car if the facial recognition and fingerprint authentication functions have been programmed. The driver just touches the door handle and faces the B-pillar momentarily until a green circle appears. Once inside, a touch of the little fingerprint sensor completes the GV60’s key-free startup. I’ve never felt burdened by a key fob, so the facial recognition didn’t make much of an impression, but I’ve often generated stress hormones because I couldn’t find my keys, so in that sense facial recognition is a godsend.

GV60’s spacious and lush interior has a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and matching digital gauge cluster that form one humongous panel along the dash. An impressive 17-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system is included. The whole thing exudes “too complicated” energy but is mercifully fairly easy to use.

The real focus of attention inside the GV60 is a bit of magic Genesis calls the Crystal Sphere. It’s a beautiful orb in the center console, visible when the car is in off mode. Touch the start button and the crystal ball twirls downward and turns into a rotary shift knob.
