What: This Nordmann fir is a semi-dwarf evergreen conifer with brilliant golden foliage. Abies nordmaniana “Golden Spreader” is best in light to open shade or morning sun with afternoon shade to protect it from the hot afternoon sun. As a young plant its habit is somewhat mounding with a flat, or even depressed, top. With maturity “Golden Spreader” becomes conical or pyramidal in shape with the advent of a slow growing terminal.
Where: One needs to find the Goldilocks location; i.e., a site with enough sun to bring out the golden coloration of the needles, but not too much sun so as to burn the foliage — the planting spot needs to be “just right.” Plant in soil that is well-drained.
Size: This Nordmann, or Caucasian, fir grows to be 6 feet tall with a spread of 6 feet when mature.
Care: Water the fir at least occasionally during dry periods.
