What: Mukdenia rossii ‘Karasuba,’ commonly known as Crimson Fans mukdenia, is an unusual small perennial that’s grown for its interesting foliage. In early spring the new growth emerges reddish-bronze and then fades to green in summer. In autumn the tips turn burgundy red and this color bleeds into the leaves more and more as the weather cools. In late spring short stalks of white flowers that fade to pale pink are mixed with the bronzy new growth.
Where: Mukdenia prefers a location with rich moist to well-drained or sandy soil. Provide light to open shade for good leaf color. It will grow in dappled shade, but the leaves will remain green and not develop any red color.
Size: Grows to 1 foot tall by 1 foot wide in 10 years.
Care: Crimson Fans mukdenia likes regular watering during dry weather. In fall once the leaves start to fade it can be cut to the ground. Root weevils can damage the leaves. Providing a moist location will help prevent weevil damage.
