What: If you do not have the space for a full-sized Clematis montana, try the more subdued ‘Freda’. This deciduous vine will grow about 15 to 20 feet, which is almost half the size of typical montanas and can easily be pruned further. It is also one of the most intensely colored montanas with flowers that open a deep, mauve red and then soften to a rich pink. A light, sweet fragrance dances in the breeze when in full flower. The dogwood-like flowers have attractive broad, petal-like sepals that give a full flower appearance. As the flowers fade striking bronzy foliage emerge, gradually deepening to a dark green.
Where: This vigorous clematis is a large grower and requires plenty of space to spread. It will grow best in light or open shade or full sun if the location is not a hot spot. Provide a site with rich well-drained soil where it can be occasionally watered during dry weather.
Size: Grows to 20 feet tall by 10 feet wide in 10 years.
Care: Clematis are heavy feeders and appreciate fertilizing in spring. This clematis blooms on one year old stems so prune lightly in late winter, only removing congested or tangled growth or if heavy pruning is required do it immediately after flowering in spring.
