What: Once a rare and much sought-after fern cultivar, Polystichum setiferum Divisilobum Group, commonly called soft shield fern, is a regal bouquet of large, arching fronds to three feet that are a lustrous dark green and with a feathery texture. Now ‘Bevis’ is widely available and a treat for any garden with light, open, or dappled shade. Plant in large multiples for a stately presence with other shade-loving perennials.
Where: Plant in light to open or dappled shade
Size: Grows to 3 feet by 3 feet.
Care: With the fronds being evergreen, they are generally attractive throughout the winter in the Pacific Northwest, but they may be cut back in late February or March before the new growth begins to unfurl. Water regularly in summer.
