New Mazda CX-70 Prioritizes Cargo Space Over Third-Row

Versatility And Function Without Sacrificing Creature Comforts

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 mid-size crossover SUV is a brand new model – with a caveat.

It is identical to the CX-90 that was introduced last year with the exception of a third-row seat. CX-70 is Mazda’s largest, most spacious, two-row SUV with a capacity of five adults and a cavernous cargo area to transport a myriad of gear, from golf clubs to camping gear.

The model is available in seven different packages to best fit the specific needs of a wide-ranging customer base.

My tester, the S Premium Plus trim, was powered by a 3.3-liter, inline six, turbocharged engine mated to a Skyactiv-drive, eight-speed automatic transmission. The combo achieves 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque while providing 28 miles per gallon fuel economy down the highway. Those numbers are reached with the help of a 48-volt M-Hybrid Boost.

Towing capacity has been increased to a maximum of 5,000 pounds.

CX-70 engineers took the space savings from a third-row and extended the cargo area, an answer to consumers that place a premium on engaging with their hobbies and passions in lieu of transporting seven passengers. This includes new remote-folding rear seats, which allow for easier loading into the rear of the vehicle, as well as a rear cargo area that has been optimized for storage with additional compartments, hooks for bags and other equipment, and a unique sub-trunk design that allows owners to stow valuables and other small items out of sight.

Exterior features include unique 21-inch alloy wheels with a black metal finish, hands-free power lift-gate, power panoramic sunroof, shark fin antenna, along with more blacked-out items on CX-70’s side profile including the door handles and pillar garnishes. My tester came with a a classy “Melting Copper Metallic” coat of enamel.

The interior benefits from a 12.3-inch fully digital driver’s display with a head-up active driving display projected onto the windshield, Bose 12-speaker premium audio system, frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror with Homelink, eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat with two-position memory, upgraded interior lighting, and SiriusXM satellite radio with a three-month trial. All CX-70 Premium models also benefit from the new Mazda online navigation functionality, which allows for more convenient over-the-air updates.

The CX-70 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus builds upon the features of the Premium model with a few key extras. Standard leather has been replaced by Nappa leather, available in either black or red, while other luxuries, such as a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, eight-way power adjustable passenger seat, heated rear seats, and a 150-volt outlet are also included, as well as a power-folding, auto-dimming door mirrors, and a power panoramic sunroof.

This package introduces several more safety features and driver assistance aides, like a 360° view monitor with see-through view and a new trailer hitch view to more easily facilitate aligning the vehicle tow hitch for towing hook-up. Other upgrades include front cross traffic alert, rear view monitor, and smart brake support.

Completing the long list of safety features are lane keeping alerts, and if necessary, steering inputs, to help the driver avoid roadway departures and predicted collisions with surrounding vehicles. A secondary collision reduction system is designed to apply the brakes after a rear-end collision to help avoid secondary damage. Further assisting the driver are other safety features like blind spot assist, traffic sign recognition, and front and rear parking sensors.
