Edmonds-Woodway jazz heads to NYC
The Edmonds-Woodway High School Jazz Ensemble I was selected to participate in the Essentially Ellington Jazz Band Competition and Festival in New York May 9 to 12.
This is the highest honor for high school jazz band ensembles.
The group is to meet with and hear Wynton Marsalis and attend workshops with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra members.
National Merit finalists named
The following students were recently named National Merit Finalists, putting them in the running for scholarships that will be offered this spring.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation named 8,300 finalists nationwide. Local finalists, by high school:
Edmonds-Woodway: Emma Spence and Scarlett Strauss.
Everett: David A. Comeaux and Deborah J. Peterson.
Jackson: Eunice Chu and Christopher Steckler.
Kamiak: Kevin W. Baron, Joel Bervell, Sanjay N. Chepuri, Alice X. Huang, Younsu Kim, Yvana Tran and Julie X. Xia.
Meadowdale: Rachel Lee
Snohomish: Anna M. Pisac.
Rotary honors Mariner student
Danielle Openiano was named the South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club’s Mariner High School February Student of the Month.
Danielle was nominated for the award by school staff. The senior has been involved in several activities, including jazz choir, concert choir, cross-country, track and field, and basketball. She takes challenging courses while maintaining a high GPA.
Danielle plans to attend Whitworth University in Spokane and study to become an athletic trainer.
Marysville student honored for volunteerism
Brendon Krall, 18, a student at Marysville Getchell High School’s School for the Entrepreneur was honored for his exemplary volunteer service with a state-level Certificate of Excellence from the 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program.
Krall was nominated for the award by school administration.
Presented annually by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the awards honor young people across the country for outstanding community service activities.
Krall was honored for volunteer activities at the Marysville Food Bank, Marysville Historical Society and Tulalip Boys &Girls Club.
Monroe teen serves as page in Olympia
Jacob Vatter, a homeschooled student from Monroe, recently served as a legislative page for the Senate in Olympia.
Pages deliver documents, messages and mail and spend time in the Senate chamber. They attend page school to learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process.
Jacob was able to attend a Washington State Supreme Court hearing to hear arguments about a corporation’s liability to its workers.
“Witnessing the proceedings of the Supreme Court was really interesting,” Jacob said.
Jacob was sponsored by Sen. Kirk Pearson, R-Monroe.
Title I schools honored by state
The state Friday recognized four local schools among 75 statewide as “Reward” schools for making high progress in student achievement.
The schools receive federal Title I funding for serving larger numbers of low-income children. Local schools were honored as Reward High-Progress schools, placing them in the top 10 percent of Title I schools in reading and math, combined, for three years.

Edmonds School District: Chase Lake Elementary, Hazelwood Elementary
Everett School District: Silver Lake Elementary
Lake Stevens School District: Hillcrest Elementary
Everett student earns TRIO scholarship
Ramon Ochoa of Everett was among those honored Feb. 20 by Rocky Mountain College as one of 66 TRIO scholarship recipients this year at the Montana school.
Ochoa received a $1,000 scholarship through the federally funded program, which is designed to help first-generation, low-income or disabled students succeed in college.
Snohomish art teacher wins award
Deborah Barten of Snohomish was named the 2013 Pacific Region Art Educator of the Year and the 2013 Washington Art Educator of the Year by the National Art Education Association.
The awards, determined through a peer review of nominations, will be presented at the NAEA National Convention in Fort Worth, Texas, March 7 to 10.
