Monroe 6th-graders share love of lit

Four middle school students from Monroe were recently named semifinalists in the state’s Letters About Literature project.

ool were selected as semifinalists out of 3,376 state entries.

National scholarship winners announced

Several Snohomish County students were awarded $2,500 National Merit Scholarships.

The winners were chosen from more than 15,000 finalists in the program.

owing students received scholarships: Dana Floberg of Bothell, Daniel Yoo of Bothell, Denise Schmitz of Lynnwood, and Elaine Nguyen of Mukilteo.

Local grad makes Eastern dean’s list

Marysville Pilchuck High School graduate Haley Rae Summers made the dean’s list at Eastern Washin

gton University each quarter of her freshman year.

She is majoring in nursing and is on the executive board of the Alpha Phi Sorority as the director of administration.

She is the daughter of Bob and Paula Summers.

Rotary Club honors Mariner student

Victoria Dan was named South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club’s student of the month for April.

The Mariner High School senior was nominated for her outstanding academics, school involvement and work ethic.

Victoria is this year’s valedictorian with a 3.99 GPA. Her impressive course load includes advanced placement European history, English, physics and biology classes.

She also tutors middle school students and volunteers for the Key Club.

After graduating high school, Victoria plans to pursuing a career in science.

Three local students earn tech honors

Caleb Franett of Arlington High School, Dylan Dunham of Lake Stevens High School and Ben Clair of Sultan High School have won medals in the Secondary SkillsUSA State Conference in Yakima last month.

Caleb won gold and Dylan won silver in precision machining. Ben won a silver medal in diesel mechanics.

Caleb will be going to the national SkillsUSA precision machining contest in Kansas City in June.

Caleb has designed and built a steam engine that runs on compressed air, said Tom Clemans, his instructor. He didn’t use a kit or published plans but designed the whole engine himself after studying how a steam engine works.

Granite Falls grad added to dean’s list

Shawn Rood has made the winter term dean’s list at Kettering University.

The 2009 Granite Falls High School graduate earned a 4.0 GPA.

Kettering is a co-op engineering school in Michigan.

Lake Stevens junior to represent Seafair

Tyler Storz, a Lake Stevens High School Junior, received one of the Seafair Ambassador Awards for this year. He was one of six ambassadors selected to represent Seafair.

As a Seafair ambassador, he will get a $1,000 college scholarship and a mentor from Seattle’s professional community.

Tyler will serve as a representative of Seafair in November on a trip to Seattle’s sister city of Kobe, Japan.

He will participate in a number of Seafair events this summer, including carrying the lead banner in the Alaska Airlines Torchlight Parade, competing in the Milk Carton Derby Team Challenge, volunteering at Seafair events and hosting the delegates from Kobe in September.

Everett student selected ambassador

Abby Schuman of Everett was selected to serve as a university ambassador at William Woods University next year.

She is one of 21 students from across the country who will help the office of admissions recruit students.
